Postal Museum

Mimi and PawPaw have come to D.C. several times and have not yet gotten a proper tour of the city. So we thought of the "brilliant idea" of giving Mimi the gift of Tourmobile tickets for her birthday!

The Tourmobile picks up several places downtown, but the most convenient place for pick-up (in our opinion) is Union Station. So, our plan was to drop Mimi and PawPaw off for their tour, park in the Union Station garage, and then the five of us (can you believe we have THREE kids!?!?!) going to the Postal Museum while we waited.

But we discovered upon arrival that the Tourmobile wasn't even running because of the limited access the buses had downtown on Memorial Dad weekend. There were a couple of other tours running but they would not be driving in the Mall Area. So we all decided it was not worth the time or money to go that weekend (we look forward to giving Mimi a Tourmobile raincheck next time they come for a visit). We decided instead that we should ALL explore the National Postal Museum. We had a great time; it was very interactive and child-friendly (not to mention, completely FREE)!

We saw a video of this contraption that would hold mail in the air for coming trains. A person would grab the bag without the train stopping as they passed through the town. Paw Paw had memories of this from his childhood!
