History is fun (even in the summer)!!!

Last school year, we thoroughly studied early American history starting with the early explorers (Leif Erickson, Columbus), then studied the early settlements Jamestown and Plymouth, then we went on to study the early colonies and the French Indian War.  Finally, we did a three to four month study of the American Revolution!!! We learned so much in that time.

This school year, I have decided that we will continue our American history study.

This summer, we did mini-units on the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Jillian found Lewis and Clark's route on the map while Faith wrote down the names of the states!

Then to celebrate the successful purchase of the Mississippi River in 1803,

we made Mississippi mud pie!
We ate it too and it was delicious! It was a memorable way to celebrate the Louisiana Purchase and its significance to our country.

Right now, we are reading the American Girl Caroline books to learn more about the War of 1812. We are also planning a "field trip" to explore the birth of the Star Spangled Banner in Baltimore!
